Second Torn ACL Means L&C’s Wagner Is Out For Nationals

GODFREY — When L&C’s Jocelyn Wagner heard an all-too-familiar sound in last week’s Central District title game, she knew exactly what it meant.

And it wasn’t good.

Wagner, a sophomore defender from Edwardsville, went down early in Friday’s game against St. Louis Community College. She did not return. The reason was a second torn ACL in four years in her right knee. The injury ends her playing days at L&C and means she won’t be able to play in next week’s NJCAA National Tournament in Melbourne, Florida.

“I just knew it,” Wagner said. “I heard a pop and the pain felt the same as it did the first time.”

That first time was during her sophomore season at Edwardsville High School.

“I stepped in front of the (STLCC) player to block a shot,” Wagner said of the most recent injury, “and I think I deflected it, but she ran into me. My foot was planted and it popped.”
