GODFREY — While the announcement of the NJCAA Region 24 women’s soccer player of the year came later than in past years, there was very little surprise in the selection.

Lewis and Clark Community College’s Boitumelo Rabale, the nation’s top scorer, ran away with the award, which was announced Friday, along with members of the All-Region 24 team.

Boitumelo, a sophomore from the small African nation of Lesotho, leads the nation in scoring with 52 goals and 32 assists for a total of 136 points. Each is tops in the nation.

“‘B’ is a phenomenal player,” L&C coach Tim Rooney said. “She’s got amazing ball control and sees the field very well. One thing that’s is so good about her is that she likes setting up her teammates with assists just as much as she likes scoring goals.”

Boitumelo led her team to the Region 24 regular-season championship, the postseason region tournament championship and the Central District championship. She and her teammates departed Friday morning by charter bus for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, which gets under way Monday in Melbourne, Florida.
