The volleyball team won its 2015 home opener in three-set sweep of Robert Morris University-Springfield on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at River Bend Arena. The set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-19.
“It’s always nice to win,” said head coach Jim Hunstein. “But to do it in front of a big home crowd to start the season is extra special.”
The team was led by all three of their captains. Freshman outside hitter Brooke Hustedde of Trenton, Illinois led the attack with 10 kills while sophomore outside hitter Emma Chiodini (of St. Louis, Missouri had two blocks and sophomore libero Drew Myers of Lesterville, Missouri had a pair of aces. Chiodini’s blocks earned the Trailblazers two of their first three points in the first set.
“Good captains and good leaders step up at key times,” Hunstein said. “The first match of the season is a perfect time. I knew our captains would help set the tone for the match and I expect them to do so all year.”
More than half of the team’s 29 total kills came in the third set, when the offence had 15 kills from five different hitters. The Trailblazers scored the last five points of the game on two kills from Hustedde and one each from freshman rightside hitter Bailey McGuire of East Alton, Illinois and freshman middle hitters Denae White of New Athens, Illinois and Becca Bowlin of Dunlap, Illinois
