GODFREY – The NJCAA Region 24 Golf Tournament ended Sunday, May 7 at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois, with two Trailblazers headed to Nationals in Mesa, Arizona, May 23-26.
Trailblazers Brian Gebben, a sophomore from Alton, and Joaquin Perez, a sophomore from Cordoba, Argentina, finished in the top 10, in a four-way tie for 6th place, each 18 over par total in three rounds.
For the rest of the team, the 2017 season is over. The Trailblazers placed third in a field of nine teams over the weekend, shooting a total 947 – 319 in round 1, 310 in round 2 and 318 round 3.
“While our third place finish was disappointing because we had a realistic chance of capturing second, I am really proud of this team,” Head Coach Gerald Mozur said. “They showed great resilience in coming back from a slow start in the first round to improve by 9 shots in the second. We were only 12 shots from the lead going into final round. The course played tough and scores reflected that. We were really just about two or three scores away from making the nationals as a team.”
Mozur said each of the team members contributed a highlight.
Sophomore Danny Selby, of Alton, had the low score for the tournament with his second round 73 (along with three others); sophomore Jack McKinney, of Bethalto, kept pace with a 78 in the final round to help the team grab third place overall; and sophomore Eric Howes, of Bethalto, holed a 190-yard shot for an eagle in his round.
“This is a good group of golfers, all of whom move onto other things next year” Mozur said. “They were outstanding representatives for the college.”
