EDWARDSVILLE – Gavin Huebner has been wanting to play college baseball since he was 5 years old.
Years later, Huebner will get that opportunity and he won’t have to travel far to play out his dream.
Huebner, an infielder for the Edwardsville Tigers, announced recently he will play for Lewis and Clark in Godfrey next year.
“I’m pretty excited to be able to stay around my hometown and with my family,” Huebner said.
Lewis and Clark is a member of the Midwest Community College Athletic Conference in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Coached by Randy Martz, the Trailblazers were 1-5 this season before the coronavirus wiped out the rest of the schedule. Last year, they went 30-17, two wins shy of advancing to the NJCAA Division II World Series for the first time since 1996.
Two of Huebner’s high school teammates, Blake Burris and Grant Schaefer, from last year’s state championship team, are both at Lewis and Clark. They made a pitch to Huebner.
“They both said that it’s a fun time and really good team to be around,” Huebner said.
