L&C’s International Athletes Leaving During Crisis

GODFREY — Friday’s call for a “shelter in place” lockdown by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is the next level of the state trying to hold off the coronavirus in the state. But for some international college students at Lewis and Clark Community College, it’s really nothing new. Many have been holed up in their apartments on a nearly deserted campus for some time, but are trickling back home or preparing to do so.
“This is spring break week anyway, but for the internationals who stayed here, it was pretty lonely,” said Ryan Hodge, assistant director of admissions and registration at L&C, as well as men’s soccer coach at L&C. “Nobody’s doing anything on campus.”
With the remainder of spring semester in limbo, Hodge said student-athletes, especially the international ones, have arranged to complete classes online. Most have arranged to do so and have left or will soon.
”This is a crazy thing we’re going through,” Hodge said. “I know they want to be home and their parents want them home too. Some have gone home and others went on spring break trips to friends’ relatives. If they aren’t home now, they’ll leave when they get back to campus.”
